River Trees 2019 - Round 2

River Trees Program 2019 Round 2 - Applications Open April 2019

As part of the River Vision, Logan City Council has developed the River Trees Program to help improve the natural values of the Logan and Albert Rivers. The program provides private landholders on minor or major waterways in Logan with the opportunity to apply for up to 240 free native tube stock to undertake revegetation of the waterways on their property and re-establish the riparian vegetation.

Revegetating the waterways will provide many ecological and social benefits that all Logan residents and visitors will be able to enjoy, including:

Ecological

  • Helping to stabilise waterway banks;
  • Improved water quality of the Logan and Albert Rivers by reducing sediment runoff; and
  • Increasing habitat and habitat connectivity for our native fauna.

Social

  • Providing for better fishing through the increased habitat as a result of the extra woody debris and shade that will be present along the water’s edge;
  • Improving the water quality making for a better location to enjoy water activities; and
  • Increasing resilience to flooding as the extra vegetation will reduce downstream flood risk.

All of the benefits listed above contribute to achieving the three key themes of the Logan River Vision including:

  • River Play – a place where the community can connect to the river in a fun and playful way;
  • River Destinations – a place to visit as a destination; and
  • River Health – addressing the community’s concern about the river’s health in the long-term.

Eligible property owners can apply for between 80 - 240 free tube stock from a predetermined selection of native species to revegetate their riverbanks.

If you are eligible and would like to apply for the River Trees Program, a link will be provided below in early April 2019 where you will be able to make an application.

In the meantime, please visit Revegetating Logan for more information on how to carry out a revegetation project.
